NAIROBI, Feb 28 (AFP) - The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said Tuesday it had distributed seed to more than 70,000 families in Rwanda and the programme was now coming to an end.

The seed distribution programme covered 18 municipalities, mostly in the southwest of the country where families were especially vulnerable, after losing everything during last year's civil war, an ICRC statement said here.

Each family was given 13 kilogrammes of bean seeds, two of maize and three of soya bean. They were also given a ration of maize and beans for food so that they do not eat the seed.

More than 80 percent of the Rwandan population live off agriculture and the seed distribution was intended to make them self-sufficient in food again.
