KIGALI, July 18 (AFP) - Agathe Uwilingiyimana was sworn in as prime minister of Rwanda on Sunday despite opposition from within her own party, officials said.

Forty-year-old Uwilingiyimana, former education minister and member of the Democratic Republican Movement (MDR), was appointed Friday after a meeting between President Juvenal Habyarimana and the five different parties that make up his government.

Ousted prime minister Dismas Nsengiyaremye, who also belongs to MDR, and other MDR members took umbrage at the decision to appoint Uwilingiyimana and have suspended her from the party in her absence.
