ARUSHA, Tanzania, March 16 (AFP) - Rwanda's government and the rebel Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF) opened peace talks in this northern Tanzanian town Tuesday, officials said.

The RPF is demanding new assurances that the government will stick to an agreement for nearly 700 French troops protecting foreigners to withdraw from the tiny central African state, sources close to the negotiations said.

The two sides signed a joint communique in the Tanzanian city of Dar es Salaam on March 7 calling for a ceasefire which took effect on March 9, the departure of foreign troops and their replacement by an international force under the control of the United Nations or the Organisation of African Unity.
