KIGALI, June 1 (AFP) - Renegade soldiers killed some 25 people and looted shops in the northeast Rwanda towns of Ruhengeri and Gisenyi at the weekend, national radio reported Sunday.

The troops killed 15 people at Ruhengeri and 10 others in Gisenyi, close to the border with Zaire, the radio said. No reason was given for the outbreak of violence which began on Friday and left more than 30 people seriously wounded.

Most stores in Ruhengeri and at the commercial centre in Mukamira in the same region were pillaged and badly damaged.

Automatic weapons fire was heard in Gisenyi overnight on Saturday and continued into Sunday morning.

Throughout Sunday, local authorities and security officials sought to recover some of the stolen goods, informed sources told AFP.
