On Arg’s request, the Fr Amb briefly informed about the MF operation. Apparently 2500
French soldiers have been mobilized. 500 of them are operating near Rwanda’s border. Only
a small number are operating within Rwanda. The objective of the operation is supposed to
be:
-? Create safe conditions for the operation of humanitarian organizations
-? Develop a sense of trust by its presence
-? If necessary, take necessary military measures.
Iqbal Riza, SG’s assistant for PKOs added that working contacts have already been
established between the UNAMIR Command and the French soldiers. He stressed that an
ever more troubling factor are the intensifying attacks of the Govt radio station against
UNAMIR. This comment provoked the Arg and Sp Ambs to sharply intervene with the Amb of
Rwanda, reminding him that his Govt is responsible for the security of UN forces. The SC
President then spoke in the same vein to the press.
