GENEVA, Feb 24 (AFP) - A new wave of more than 24,000 refugees has crossed into Tanzania, fleeing ethnic conflicts in Burundi, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said Friday.

The refugees, comprising 16,000 Burundians and 8,000 Rwandans, have been directed to a camp at Kitali, 75 kilometres (47 miles) from the border, where a vaccination programme has started, the UNHCR said.

At least 60,000 refugees from Burundi and about 600,000 of the estimated two million refugees from Rwanda are already living in Tanzania.

About 700,000 people fled Burundi after an attempted coup in October 1993. Most returned but 140,000 are still in exile in the Uvira region of Zaire.
