BUJUMBURA, Oct 25 (AFP) - The army in Burundi has quietly buried assassinated President Melchior Ndadaye and senior officials murdered with him in last week's putsch, sources close to the army said here Monday.

They said the burials took place on Sunday in the presence of Red Cross officials.

According to surviving ministers, Ndadaye, the country's first president from the Hutu majority, was murdered along with the national assembly's speaker and his deputy, the minister of territorial administration and the head of the intelligence service.

Communications Minister Jean-Marie Ngendahayo, in refuge in a western embassy, said the wife of the foreign minister was also shot dead as she cradled a four-month-old baby in her arms.

In neighbouring Rwanda, Carlos Rodriguez, delegate of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, said 249,000 people from Burundi, mostly women and children, had taken refuge there as of Sunday afternoon. He said many more were massed the other side of the border waiting to enter.
