Meanwhile, French military intelligence sources said in Paris that Uganda was providing aid and logistical support to the Tutsi rebels.

"The number of battalions fielded by the RPF (Rwanda Patriotic Front) is far in excess of its capabilities," a French military source said.

"Ten battalions have been deployed at a time when RPF forces are estimated at 2,500 men," he added. Each battalion has between 500 and 700 men.

The implication was that "the Ugandan army had to be implicated" on the side of the rebels, the source said.

France currently has some 300 soldiers in Rwanda to protect an estimated 400 French citizens in the country.
