BRUSSELS, April 10 (Reuter) - Three Belgian civilians were killed in
Kigali last Thursday on the first day of violence in the Rwandan
capital following the death of the president, a Belgian foreign
ministry spokesman said on Sunday.

I can confirm three Belgian civilians were killed last Thursday, the
spokesman told Reuters in reply to a query.

He said he could not comment on the circumstances of their death. Their
identities were not disclosed.

Earlier, a Belgian officer serving with U.N. forces in Kigali said four
Belgians had been killed. Colonel Luc Marchal said they had been caught
in combat zones.

In addition, 10 Belgian soldiers serving as U.N. peacekeepers were
killed last week as they tried in vain to protect the Rwandan prime
minister.

Belgium was the colonial master of the tiny central African state until
1962. There is widespread resentment against Belgians, accused by many
of the majority Hutu tribe of siding with rebels from the minority
Tutsi.
